After my divorce, NYC was my first experience with solo travel. My 6-year-old son and I had taken the train from Lincoln to spend the first week of July with my brother and his family on Fire Island in New York. On our last day of vacation, we had an opportunity to spend half a day in NYC before boarding the train for home. My son wasn't interested in playing tourist, but I was. My brother handed me his subway pass and a map of Manhattan and said, "I'll take your son to a movie . Meet me back here in two hours." I'd never been to NYC before and never ridden a subway, but I knew that if I didn't summon up the courage to break out of my comfort zone, I'd always regret it. In those next two hours I took trains and walked from 55th and Fifth Avenue down to Battery Park and saw the outside of all the major attractions. From that experience, I learned that I had the ability and the confidence to travel on my own, and every year since then I've taken a solo trip on Independence Day. I've been to D.C. and Chicago, travelling confidently with a subway pass and a map each time. Now it's time to go back to NYC and actually experience the things that I saw only from the outside last time.
